If the door itself runs smoothly by hand but the automation doesn't, the fault is in the opener, its power supply, the remotes or the safety beams. Some of these you can check yourself in a few minutes.
Quick checks before you book
- Power: is the opener's power point switched on, and is the opener's light working? After a storm, check your switchboard for a tripped circuit.
- Release: if the manual release was pulled, the motor will run without moving the door. Re-engage it (see our power outage guide).
- Remote: does the wall button work but the remote doesn't? Try a new battery first. Humidity and heat flatten coin batteries faster than you'd expect.
- Safety beams: the two small sensors near the floor need to see each other. Wipe the lenses, check for spider webs and make sure neither has been bumped.
When it's the motor
If the opener hums, clicks or does nothing after the checks above, the usual suspects are the circuit board (surge or moisture damage), the drive gear, or the capacitor. Whether to repair or replace depends on the age of the unit and whether parts are still available for that model.
If you're replacing an opener, consider one with battery backup: on the Gold Coast, summer storms regularly cause short outages.
Common questions
Why does my garage door open by itself?
Common causes are a stuck wall button, a remote pressed in a bag or pocket, or a remote or coding issue. Check the wall button and remotes first; if it continues, have the opener checked.
Can I get a copy of my garage door remote?
Usually yes, if you know the opener brand and model or the remote's model. Many newer remotes use rolling codes and need to be coded to the opener.
