Most garage door faults fall into a handful of patterns: a door that won't move, a door that moves unevenly, a door that's loud, or a door that reverses or stops part-way. Describing what you see and hear over the phone usually narrows it down before anyone arrives.
Common faults and what they usually mean
- Loud bang, then the door is very heavy: on sectional doors this is the classic sign of a broken torsion spring. Stop using the opener; it can strain or burn out the motor trying to lift dead weight.
- One side lower than the other: often a snapped or slipped lift cable or a cable that has come off its drum. Don't keep cycling the door, as it can jam in the tracks.
- Motor runs but the door doesn't move: check the emergency release hasn't been pulled (the trolley is disconnected). If it's engaged, the drive gear or chain/belt may be worn.
- Door reverses before it closes: commonly safety beams that are dirty, knocked out of line, or in direct sun, or a force/limit setting that needs adjusting.
- Grinding, scraping or shuddering: worn rollers, dry or bent tracks, or a roller door curtain rubbing on the guides.
Why Gold Coast doors wear the way they do
Salt air near the beachfront and the Broadwater speeds up rust on springs, cables, track fixings and the steel parts of opener rails. Humidity and summer heat are hard on opener circuit boards and remote batteries, and spring/summer thunderstorms bring power surges and outages that leave motors stuck or confused about their travel limits.
Regular rinsing of exposed hardware (not the motor), keeping tracks clean, and a periodic service make a real difference in coastal suburbs.
What to do before you call
- Note the door type (roller, sectional/panel-lift or tilt), the opener brand if there's a label, and when the problem started.
- If the door is stuck open and you need to secure the property, read our guide on using the manual release safely first: never pull the release with a door that is open and has a broken spring.
- Then call 0413 536 596 and describe the symptoms.
Common questions
Can I keep using my garage door if a spring is broken?
No. With a broken spring the opener is lifting the full weight of the door, which can damage the motor and the door can drop unexpectedly. Leave it closed if you can and get it looked at.
Is it worth repairing an old garage door?
It depends on what's failed. Springs, cables, rollers and remotes are routine replacements. Rusted-through panels, a badly damaged roller curtain or an obsolete opener with no available parts are where replacement starts to make sense. Ask for both options so you can compare.
