Sectional doors are made of horizontal panels joined by hinges that run up and back along tracks on rollers. They're the standard on most newer Gold Coast homes, including the estates in the northern growth suburbs. They move a lot of parts, so they reward regular attention.
What goes wrong with sectional doors
- Torsion spring breaks: a bang from the garage and a door that suddenly feels much heavier. The spring sits on a shaft above the door and is under high tension: not a DIY repair.
- Cables fray or come off the drum: the door sits crooked or jams part-way.
- Rollers wear out: noise, wobble and the door jumping in the track.
- Hinges crack: particularly on the top panel where the opener arm attaches.
- Panel damage: a dented bottom panel can often be replaced on its own if the panel profile and colour are still available.
Looking after a sectional door
Once or twice a year, look along the tracks for loose bolts, listen for new noises, and check that the door stays put when it's released halfway (with the opener disengaged and the door closed first, then lifted by hand). A door that drifts up or down is out of balance and putting extra load on the opener.
Common questions
Why does my sectional door shake when it opens?
Worn rollers, loose hinges or a door that's out of balance are the usual causes. Get it checked before the extra load wears out the opener.
Can you replace just one panel?
Often, yes, if the same panel profile and colour are still made. Older or discontinued designs may need the whole door replaced.
