A service is about catching worn rollers, rusting springs and loose fixings before they turn into a jammed door on a Monday morning. In coastal suburbs it's also about keeping salt and grit out of moving parts.
What a proper service should cover
- Door balance check with the opener disengaged.
- Spring and cable inspection for rust, fraying and wear.
- Rollers, hinges, tracks and fixings checked and tightened.
- Lubrication of the right parts with the right product.
- Opener force and travel limits set, and the safety reverse tested.
- Safety beams checked and aligned, and the manual release tested.
What you can do between services
- Once a month, run the door and listen. New noises are an early warning.
- Test the auto-reverse: place a piece of timber flat on the floor under the door and close it. The door should reverse when it touches the timber. If it doesn't, stop using the opener until it's checked.
- Near the beach, rinse exposed tracks and hardware occasionally and dry them off.
Common questions
How often should a garage door be serviced?
Manufacturers commonly suggest a yearly service; doors used heavily or close to the beach may benefit from more frequent checks. Check your door and opener manuals.
