Springs do the heavy lifting on a garage door; the opener only guides it. When a spring or cable fails, the door becomes very heavy or crooked, and it's the single most common reason people call for an urgent repair.
Signs your spring or cable has gone
- A loud bang from the garage when nobody was using the door.
- A visible gap in the coil of the torsion spring above a sectional door.
- The door feels far heavier than usual when lifted by hand, or the opener strains and stops.
- A cable hanging loose, or the door sitting lower on one side.
Why springs and cables aren't a DIY job
Torsion and roller drum springs store a lot of energy. Releasing or winding them without the right winding bars and clamps is a well-known cause of serious hand and face injuries. Lift cables are under the same tension. Leave the door closed, unplug or don't use the opener, and get a qualified repairer.
Questions worth asking
- Will both springs be replaced? On doors with two springs, replacing just the broken one means the other is likely to fail soon after.
- Are the cables and rollers in good condition? It's efficient to check them while the door is already apart.
- What spring size is being fitted? It should match the door's weight so the door is balanced.
Common questions
How long do garage door springs last?
Springs are rated in cycles (one open and close) rather than years, so lifespan depends on how often the door is used and on rust. A door used many times a day will wear its springs out sooner than one used once a day.
Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?
Not safely by hand, and not with the opener. If you must get a car out, call for help rather than trying to lift the full weight of the door.
